Omnicom Media Group (OMG) was in Las Vegas at the centennial of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hosted our own events, sat in on some amazing talks, and experienced the most groundbreaking technology being developed\u2014from flying cars to digital sign language interpreters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, CES saw 15% growth from 2023, welcoming more than 4,000 exhibitors, including 1,400 startups from more than 50 countries, while 250 conference sessions with 1,000 speakers engaged and inspired. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The panels explored broad trends like the rising tide of Gen Z\u2014now a quarter of the population and emerging as true technophiles\u2014and the implications of AI and greater connectivity through private satellite technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve gathered some of the most exciting areas of innovation and products making waves\u2014and what these trends might mean for marketers this year and beyond. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>AI dominates\u2014but not in the tech you might expect<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You won\u2019t be surprised to hear that AI dominated conversations and innovation at CES this year. But instead of software\u2014open source or not\u2014much of the buzziest AI at the show was linked to personal gadgets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take, for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hu.ma.ne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a wearable screenless AI-powered alternative to using a smartphone. The pin can answer queries and use its outward-facing camera to read the nutritional value of your lunch or keep track of your protein intake for the day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More personal AI tech included the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/1\/9\/24030667\/rabbit-r1-ai-action-model-price-release-date\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbit R1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a handheld device that responds to complicated, multipart voice commands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>You can ask Rabbit R1 for simple stuff, like a dinner recipe, or have it do all the searching, comparison, and clicking to purchase a plane ticket. <\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of it as your AI-powered personal assistant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This kind of AI may impact how consumers interact with content online\u2014a point for brands to consider as AI handles more searching and interaction with online text, shopping carts, and customer service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CES1-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-66479 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CES1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CES1-1.png 512w, https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CES1-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Rabbit R1 (rabbit.tech)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mobility dominates while the EV reigns supreme\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While CES used to primarily focus on gadgets and PCs, vehicles\u2014which fall into a category CES broadly defines as \u201cmobility\u201d\u2014have more recently stolen the show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>This year, we got a major reveal from Hyundai, which debuted the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/videos\/hyundai-supernal-s-a2-electric-air-taxi-preps-for-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Supernal S-A2<\/b><\/a><b>, a flying car capable of speeds up to 120 mph at 1,500 feet.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seating five, with lift and tilt powered by eight tilting rotors, the Supernal has something in common with many of this year\u2019s more popular vehicles at the show: It is all electric.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As hype died down around self-driving cars, many companies have returned to developing electric vehicles (EVs), which have grown into a major market. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/outlook\/mmo\/electric-vehicles\/worldwide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 2020 and 2023, global EV sales climbed from $3 million to $10.25 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and are still growing. The newest models are more like software-defined vehicles (SDVs), with functionality that can be tweaked via over-the-air updates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SDVs may represent a paradigm shift for makers, marketers, and consumers. From sophisticated sensors that track vitals to urine analyzers, home health, in particular, has dominated conversations at CES. This year, developers shifted their work toward one specific demographic\u2014women. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes called \u201cfemtech,\u201d this category showed growth at this year\u2019s CES. Innovations included a new product from Irish startup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.identifyher.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IdentifyHer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hich is developing a wearable sensor that tracks menopause symptoms and their frequency and severity, and it can also deliver a cooling effect during hot flashes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Femtech includes beauty, and L\u2019Oreal delivered a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-01-10\/ces-2024-l-oreal-meta-profiler-and-walmart-embrace-ai#:~:text=L'Oreal%20SA%2C%20the%20world's,using%20AI%20and%20machine%20learning.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keynote at this year\u2019s CES<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, illustrating the growing importance of AI and ML in beauty. It was also the first-ever CES presentation by a chief executive of the beauty industry. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are major drivers of the economy, but for too long, brands have neglected women 50 and older. This year\u2019s innovators at CES are leading the way in changing that. French company Ives brought the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ives.fr\/index.php\/nos-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iris Signbot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which interprets and generates sign language to serve the deaf community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also saw AR goggles and apps that describe the environment to users in real time, locating objects to make navigating the world easier for the visually impaired.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Meanwhile, optics conglomerate <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.essilorluxottica.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>EssilorLuxottica<\/b><\/a><b> debuted eyeglass frames that double as hearing aids, aimed at stylishly serving those with hearing loss.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inclusivity and accessibility are increasingly part of the cultural conversation, and tech companies have responded with products that serve a global population of more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/disability-and-health#:~:text=It%20results%20from%20the%20interaction,experience%20a%20significant%20disability%20today.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.3 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people with disabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marketers have an opportunity to serve these communities more holistically, too\u2014and not just by touting inclusive technology. Inclusive practices in copywriting, like using camel case in hashtags (e.g., #HeartsAndScience), alternate text in images, and going beyond graphic design alone to convey meaning, can all have an impact. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CES4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66369 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CES4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CES4.png 512w, https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CES4-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Nuance Glasses from EssilorLuxottica (essilorluxottica.com)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Still dreaming up the metaverse<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CES 2024 saw a breakthrough in the world of immersive technology, also known as \u201cthe metaverse.\u201d Global tech firm Siemens, for example, announced new partnerships aimed at making the industrial metaverse a reality based on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/xcelerator.siemens.com\/global\/en.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAnfmsBhDfARIsAM7MKi169kics1szU9w34RAyUDH-6BVCMms0Z7gRmVNGdREGYZ7K69W1vqwaAhp4EALw_wcB&amp;acz=1&amp;gad_source=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xcelerator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0its open digital business platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>The company [Siemens] envisions a world where people can work alongside AI in a virtual landscape to accelerate processes, scale faster, and enhance innovation.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virtual doctor\u2019s visits and even virtual concerts are fast becoming a reality, too. Startup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundscapeuniverse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soundscape<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0highlighted its musical metaverse. It supports avatars in a VR environment for an immersive musical festival experience without the travel, camping, and sweating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It must be on to something since the company recently announced partnerships with GRiZ, Slash, Evanescence, Goose, and other tech innovators, with more to come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the metaverse moves from dream to reality, more companies will build their own worlds to represent their brand, creating fully immersive experiences for their customers. Sony showcased its new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/direct.playstation.com\/en-us\/buy-accessories\/access-controller?emcid=pa-co-421875&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiAwP6sBhDAARIsAPfK_wbzcJv631lfPGuwPlqpgLdOwHatNlKki7E__HfcRAfuS0uiKegikH0aArkXEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access controller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at CES, aiming to make gaming more inclusive. For people with limited mobility, using PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo controllers can be difficult, if not impossible. The Access controller has customizable buttons, grips, and joysticks to meet the unique needs of every gamer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other standouts for gamers of all stripes were Razer\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.razer.com\/concepts\/project-esther\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Esther<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cushy HD haptic chair cover with 16 feedback sensors to deliver a more fully immersive experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASUS also launched the incredibly compact <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rog.asus.com\/desktops\/mini-pc\/rog-nuc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROG NUC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gaming PC that weighs in at just 1.76 pounds and is less than two inches wide. Many manufacturers are now in a race to build the smallest, most powerful gaming devices possible, a move that was evident in this year\u2019s offerings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expansive presence of gaming devices, software, and accessories at CES this year is indicative of broader trends.
