{"id":27220,"date":"2020-04-27T09:06:01","date_gmt":"2020-04-27T13:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hearts-sciencecom.local\/?p=27220"},"modified":"2020-04-28T20:23:51","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T00:23:51","slug":"is-it-worth-deleting-my-online-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/en-pt\/is-it-worth-deleting-my-online-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Is it worth deleting my online data?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><b>Exploring the gap between data privacy regulation and implementation<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve spent the past six months learning what the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is, when it will be passed, when it goes into effect and the potential impacts to my clients\u2019 marketing technology stacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When CCPA went into effect on January 1, most people I knew had no clue what it was. I was focused on educating the agency and my clients and considering the changes we needed to make to tech stacks. And while I\u2019m an expert in my field, what would these changes mean for me as a consumer?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Understanding new regulations<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vox published an excellent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2019\/12\/30\/21030754\/ccpa-2020-california-privacy-law-rights-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> distilling down CCPA for the average person. Their newest podcast, Reset, also had a great episode.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on my understanding of the law, I had an inkling that it wouldn\u2019t have a huge impact on the advertising business. It all fell on the consumer. I\u2019ve had the mindset of education over regulation; we all watched how much of a disaster it was when Zuckerberg testified on the Hill.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Check your digital footprint<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In early March, while reading my daily industry email newsletters, I learned of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saymine.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mine<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a tech startup attempting to centralize the process for data requests. Intrigued, I signed up and granted them access to my Gmail account so they could get the data they needed to provide a list of companies with my online information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They quickly retrieved and provided an overview of my data. On their level of data control, using a scale of 1 to 6, the average user is around 3.5. I was at 1. Oh boy. I explored my footprint, and there were almost 500 companies connected to me\u2014mostly in the financial and identity space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-27371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/LWR_Recording-smaller.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1206\" height=\"657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/LWR_Recording-smaller.png 1206w, https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/LWR_Recording-smaller-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/LWR_Recording-smaller-1024x558.png 1024w, https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/LWR_Recording-smaller-768x418.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1206px) 100vw, 1206px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I dug in more to see what they found. I scrolled and started picking random companies to ask to delete my data. It was a pretty manual process, where I had to click into each company and ask for my data to be reclaimed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The journey to reclaim my data<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saymine.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sends emails on my behalf, cc\u2019ing me. I had Mine send the request to 10\u201311 companies, more out of curiosity than to take control. Just doing those 10 and scrolling through was over an hour of my time. My inbox quickly filled up with emails. Oh man.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Mine sent the request, each company required me to take another action like giving a response or filling out a form.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The replies varied by company. The law allows businesses to ask for ID validation to process requests. Some businesses wouldn\u2019t fulfill since I was not a California resident\u2014fair, per the law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One company asked for further details, as they couldn\u2019t find my account. I asked them to delete my data since I wasn\u2019t sure who they were; unfortunately, I couldn\u2019t provide what they needed, and therefore my request was not valid. Another company asked me to schedule a Zoom meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27288 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Picture1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"922\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Picture1.png 922w, https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Picture1-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/hearts-science.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Picture1-768x388.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 922px) 100vw, 922px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another requested power of attorney or sufficient information to demonstrate I have the authority to make this request since it came through a third party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What?! I thought the law was giving us rights?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What data is Facebook collecting?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook launched its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/1\/28\/21112380\/facebook-activity-tool-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off-Facebook Activity tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the end of January, so I decided to check it out. It first requested access to my Facebook data\u2014my data is 500MB and many folders. I clicked through them and found pictures, friends I had removed and messages. <\/span>It was a lot of data to go through. I decided not to dig deep and saved it on my computer.<\/p>\n<p>Under \u201cSettings\u201d and then \u201cYour Facebook Information,\u201d I found the link for my Off-Facebook Activity. You\u2019d think it would be easier to find\u2026or maybe that\u2019s the point.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When clicking on \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/off_facebook_activity\/activity_list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manage your Off-Facebook Activity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d they showed me 360 apps and websites where they had collected data on me.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>This isn\u2019t even the full list. They have a disclaimer that says not all apps and websites are listed. Great.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I click into random sites\/apps to see the number of interactions. Similar to requesting that data be deleted from a website using Mine, I had to go into each app collecting Off-Facebook Activity and select \u201cTurn off future activity from {site\/app name}\u201d and confirm my request.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Regulation is paved with good intentions<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wow\u2026 this is A LOT I must do. CCPA and pending privacy regulations have good intentions, but the current execution is not streamlined or simple to do. It\u2019s all on me (and every other person) to go site by site to request my data be deleted. Then I have to follow up after 45 days if the company has not complied.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Same thing for Facebook. It takes four clicks per site\/app to have future activity not linked to my Facebook account, while they keep all my past Off-Facebook Activity. To me, the juice is not worth the squeeze.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you tried to request your data to be deleted?
